Cuneiform was very important to early civilizations. It is an early form of writing learned by the very few people who were lucky and rich enough to attend writing school. Cuneiform was often written on clay tablets that would be carved on with sharp reeds. If you wanted to learn this written language you would have to spend 12 years before you could become a scribe. You ask why it is so hard to learn? Well, it's not simple like the alphabet we use now. There are over twelve-hundred characters to memorize, and that's a lot! At first Cuneiform was mostly pictures of the item or object, but those evolved into lines and arrows. Cuneiform was useful in ancient Mesopotamia because it could help keep records. You could keep records of what you traded and how good the harvest was. Also, you could keep records of whether the gods like you and what you have to offer to them. It also allowed people pass on myths and stories through many generations. Cuneiform was vital in ancient Sumer.
