David Ortiz has been through many ups and downs throughout the 43 years of his life. He has faced many challenges and learned from all of his experiences. If he could only share one lesson with the community, I think it would be to “Never Give Up”. This lesson has been modeled by him all throughout his journey, from the Dominican, to the majors. He was raised in Haina, a city riddled with crime, drugs, and violence and due to this, had strict limits on what he could and couldn’t do. David had one dream, to play baseball in the US. Instead of letting the slim chance of making it defeat him, he persevered and was eventually taken in to a scouting camp by the Marlins. When the sent him home due to injury, he was broken, but did not give up. Soon after another year of hard work he was put into the Mariners farm system. He put up great numbers, but was again put down when he did not get called up in the system. After being traded to the Twins and playing overall productive baseball, he was released. This made him question his skills and abilities, but after talking to his dad, made the crucial decision to keep going. David was signed by the Red Sox where he became one of the most successful players in the world. This shows that if you persevere you will achieve your goals.
